On
Saturday evening Ellsworth (Elzie) Gerrels, a retired General Electric
engineer and consultant to NASA, will present the US space program and the
future of space exploration, helping us to better understand the Design
and Creation of our Universe.
Mr.
Gerrels has 38 years in design and development of advance space systems
including the launch of our nations first rockets and missiles in the
early 60’s, and the conceptual planning and design and development of
advanced manned missions to the Moon and Mars.
He was on the ground floor of the Apollo project, which landed our
first astronauts on the lunar surface in 1969. He worked with other
engineers and scientists in the development of space station concepts,
which culminated in the International Space Station, now in orbit.
He
joined a team, lead by Dr. Wernher von Braun, to study concepts to land 12
men on Mars by 1985. He was instrumental in the design and development of
advanced nuclear power systems for lunar and Mars colonies and space
defense “Star Wars” initiatives.
Mr. Gerrels has been on several government committees addressing
United States
space needs and was an ad-hoc member of NASA’s Space Technology Advisory
Committee.
Since
his retirement in 1995, he has devoted considerable time speaking to
universities, schools, churches and secular organizations on Space
Exploration and also to develop a greater understanding and appreciation
of God’s role in the creation of our Earth, life and our vast
universe. These speaking
engagements have taken him over much of the
United States
and recently to
Russia
,
Thailand
,
Cambodia
and
Poland
. Mr. Gerrels complements his
talks using many spectacular NASA photos, of
space missions, our solar system and universe.
